Jackie O. Progress and such

Bloggers, do you ever sit down to blog and have no idea how to word what is going on in your head? That is how I feel lately. My head is filled with sewing ideas and thoughts. I have been making dresses like mad, but not for the sole purpose to fill my wardrobe. Instead, I have found myself really trying to learn the pattern making process and how one alteration effects another...for instance, moving darts around, petite fit, and FBA. I have not written much about it because I am not an authority and feel like I need a sign like new drivers, "New sewer, be cautious!" Anyway, I wanted to mention it. I am playing with both vintage and modern patterns and figuring out what features I like and look best on me. Ultimately, I am trying to mold it into the perfect dress...or several! ha. Make sense? For newbies to sewing, I highly recommend learning pattern fit with summer dresses. It is a great beginning, and the time and money investment is not too high. This summer has really helped my comfort level with the use of muslins and draping. As we know, a great fit is more than half the battle.
Now on to the Jackie O. dress...after my whole talk above...the funny thing is this pattern only needed a petite adjustment! Isn't that funny? No FBA, no tucks, or moving of darts. It is a very simple pattern with a lot of darts again... 8 in the front/back bodice and double set darts in the front/back of skirt ...16 in total. Love the darts in vintage patterns and, by the way, I love marking by muslins with sharpie markers. Small bits of happiness! I was going to try for the bell skirt, but I don't want to mess a potentially good thing. The bell shape dress will be next... My cotton sateen fabric is in the dryer. When I bought my fabric, it looked fuchsia, but at home it has more orange in it. A bit on the coral side which is fine with me.
This morning after camp drop off, I am heading to Hancock's for a zipper and lining. I haven't look if I need any but...there is a Butterick Pattern sale, 99 cents...I am just saying...

Hopefully tonight I will cut. And, of course, this is not my only dress going right now...I am multi-tasking in the dress department again. Wrapping up a sundress....which the bodice and strap gave me a bit of trouble or is "challenge" a better word? Maybe I will have it to show tomorrow.

Have a good day!

It's so awesome that you are learning so much. I look forward to any tips you want to pass on to us that you think may help. This is an area I have yet to venture into myself, but I know would be extremely helpful.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. Someone suggested turning the yellow skirt into a maxi dress by raising it above the waist (the waist is too big as is) and attaching a knit bodice. Sounds intriguing. I may give it a try.

Have a blessed day.

OMG! How do you do it with kids? You're just like Dawn of Two On Two off! You're prolific. You are definitely an inspiration to this newbie sewist.

You are going to perfect your techniques and fitting by making muslins and comparisons. Practice makes perfect holds true.

I know exactly what you mean about having a head too full of ideas, possibilities and thoughts about what I'm working on, patterns and future projects. So much so that blogging about it has become to much of an effort. I've started so many posts over the last 2 months that has ended in the bin that I've lost count. I feel so sorry for DH; pattern-reading has taken over recipe-reading :-) so his dinners are becoming less "fitted" as my clothes get more fitted. No good at multi-tasking anymore! Can't wait to see your Jackie O. dress. Enjoy your week-end

Cindy, I think you are really making such progress and it is evident with everything you sew. I am still waaaaay behind in learning about fit.

I am really wanting to perfect my techniques at this point. If I stop reading my blog roll, I plan on watching the "Full Busted? Sew Clothes That Fit!" video over lunch.

There's soooo much to learn! I guess that is what makes all this so exciting and challenging. Don't worry about needing to be an authority. So many of us have gained valuable support and information from sharing our struggles and what we're learning. So let it all hang out, Cindy! LOL You're doing great work!
